Milan player ratings vs Inter: Ibrahimovic decisive, but quartet poor in collapse

Milan suffered a 4-2 defeat to Inter in the Derby della Madonnina on Sunday night as we threw away a commanding lead at half-time.

Ante Rebic and Zlatan Ibrahimovic put us 2-0 ahead after 45 minutes, but we simply couldn’t hold out after the break as Inter came storming back.

While our talisman once again impressed and Ismael Bennacer was brilliant in midfield, sadly that wasn’t matched by many of those around them across the 90 minutes as our dream derby ultimately ended up being a nightmare.

Milan player ratings vs Inter:

Gianluigi Donnarumma, 6 – Little he could have done about the goals as he was left exposed and vulnerable by his defence. Did produce some key saves as the game went on.

Andrea Conti, 5.5 – Didn’t do too much wrong which is progress for him, but ultimately there was one decisive mistake as he played Alexis Sanchez onside in the build up to Inter’s equaliser.

Simon Kjaer, 5.5 – Did well for the most part in not allowing Inter’s front duo to cause major problems, but his pitiful effort to deny Lukaku’s header sees him marked down.

Alessio Romagnoli, 5.5 – Similarly to his defensive partner, did well generally in nullifying Lukaku and Sanchez. However, lost Stefan de Vrij as Inter took the lead and those crucial moments made all the difference.

Theo Hernandez, 6 – Much like the rest of the team, he impressed in the first half and was getting forward at will to cause Inter real problems down the left flank. Importantly, we were never really left exposed defensively either. However, was much more limited and quiet in the second half.

Samu Castillejo, 6 – Great delivery in the build up to the opening goal, and as ever, the Spaniard worked tirelessly for the team and put in a real shift off the ball. Would still like to see more consistent quality from him, but a solid outing.

Franck Kessie, 5.5 – As we started to collapse, his performance nosedived as instead of giving us a solid platform on which to regroup and go again, he faded badly in the heart of the midfield and that in turn allowed Inter to start turning the screw. A real shame given he impressed in the opening 45 minutes.

Ismael Bennacer, 6.5 – A top performance from our midfield engine as he offered a key defensive presence in front of the backline at times, but it was his technical quality in possession which set him apart. Even as we started to capitulate, he managed to keep his head and continue to give us some hope of getting back into it.

Ante Rebic, 6 – Right place and right time again to score his goal, and his trickery, pace, movement and defensive work continue to make him a key part of the side now. Faded along with the rest of the team after half-time, but he’s showing enough to warrant staying in the side.

Hakan Calhanoglu, 6 – Looked much more comfortable in his role playing off the frontman, as he attacked the space in between the lines well and almost scored early on with an attempt which hit the post. Impressed in first half with his distribution and ability to offer an option, but disappeared and started to make mistakes after the interval.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 7.5 – A decisive return to the derby as he provided an assist for Rebic before getting on the scoresheet himself. Unfortunate not to get a second with an effort that hit the post late on, but he continues to provide a fundamental presence for the team up top. Has proven he has much more to offer and it’s a huge shame his impact wasn’t rewarded with three points.
