Who is Florentino Luis? Analysis of Milan target eyed as key midfield solution

Florentino Luis AC Milan transfer news

One of the priorities for Milan this summer is seemingly going to be finding an ideal partner for Ismael Bennacer in midfield, and Florentino Luis is said to be a target.

Bennacer has quickly established himself as a fundamental figure in our XI, with his tenacity, technical quality, intelligence and ability to play a high tempo all seeing him emerge as a stand-out player.

In many ways, the Algerian International has arguably set the tone and example of what’s needed across the side, while it remains to be seen if Franck Kessie can show that he can be an ideal partner for him in midfield over the next couple of months to cement his place in the starting line-up too.

As noted by MilanNews, via the paper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, it’s suggested that Luis is a target for Milan and that he could be available for around €40m.

Given he’s now on a seemingly never-ending list of potential targets for the midfield, would he be the pick of the bunch?

Florentino Luis scouting report

The 20-year-old has come through the youth ranks at Benfica and has gone on to make 29 appearances for the senior side. Further, he has represented Portugal from U15 to U20 level, winning the European Championship with the U17s and U19s and was subsequently named in the team of the tournament on both occasions.

He’s also won trophies with Benfica, albeit he has played a limited role to date and is still trying to establish himself in the first team on a regular basis.

Nevertheless, his achievements and progress both at club and international level, for a 20-year-old, are impressive, and it certainly suggests that he has plenty of potential.

So, what kind of player is Luis?

As seen in the video below, he’s more of a ‘midfield destroyer’ type rather than a creative force. His reading of the game, tactical awareness, positional sense and physicality enable him to break up play consistently and provide a solid screen in front of the backline.

He has some flair about him too with his technical quality and skills in possession, but it’s largely a no-nonsense defensive midfield role that he flourishes in whereby he wins the ball back and plays the simple pass to get his side moving forward.

In that sense, if comparing him to other familiar names, think more Tiemoue Bakayoko as opposed to Sandro Tonali.

That in turn sets up an intriguing situation and decision for the Rossoneri. Luis would arguably be a better fit for us to allow Bennacer to flourish going forward, giving him more freedom to operate in a more advanced position and showcasing his talents on the ball more.

If that’s what Milan are looking for, then the Portuguese starlet could be the man for the job. However, if we’re looking for more of an attacking threat who can offer creativity too, other names such as Samuele Ricci, Ryan Gravenberch and Teun Koopmeiners come to mind as potentially better options.

As per MilanNews, Gravenberch has been linked with Milan ahead of the summer window too having emerged as one of the top talents at Ajax, while Pianeta Milan have paired us with Ricci who has impressed for Empoli. As for Koopmeiners, MilanNews have also suggested that he’s on our radar too.

Further, with the touted €40m Luis price-tag in the report above, it’s questionable as to whether Milan have that kind of spending power and how much of a sensible investment it is if the outlay is so substantial which makes it a risky swoop.

Personally, I would like to see a bit more quality in both phases of the game in any midfield signing we may choose to make, and that is why the likes of Ricci and Gravenberch would perhaps fit the bill. That said, there’s a lot to like about Luis as he could provide a solid presence in the heart of the side, and so it’s no surprise that he has been linked.
