Mattia Caldara has revealed that he’s closing in on a return from injury and outlined his desire to form a partnership with Alessio Romagnoli in the heart of the Milan defence.
It’s been a frustrating debut campaign with us for the 24-year-old, as injuries have limited him to just one appearance thus far.

In turn, we’ve been forced to wait to see his partnership with Romagnoli blossom, although given Mateo Musacchio’s recent form, Caldara could have a battle on his hands to force his way into the starting line-up.
However, he has now revealed that he’s closing in on a return to action and has reiterated his desire to play alongside his fellow Italian international in the heart of the Milan backline.
“I’ve already done some training with the team, I just have to regain confidence with the ball and we’re there,” he is quoted as saying by MilanNews.it. “I don’t want to say [return date], I only know that I’m at the end of the tunnel and it won’t be long.
“After four months, I have a desire that I can’t describe, being on the pitch is everything. I can’t wait to prove my worth by thanking the club that believed in me.
“I really want to [play alongside Romagnoli], I’ve thought about it since I arrived at Milan, I can’t wait.”
Meanwhile, Caldara also spoke of his impression of coach Gennaro Gattuso since arriving at Milan, while revealing that directors Leonardo and Paolo Maldini have been fundamental in keeping his spirits up as he’s gone through his rehabilitation from a ruptured Achilles tendon.
“I’ve only seen him [Gattuso] from the outside up until now because I haven’t played, but he’s a great motivator because he always encourages his players, even in difficult situations,” he added.
“Leonardo and Maldini are at Milanello every day, in the past months when they saw me working alone, they comforted me and told me to come back in a calm manner, prioritising my physical health.”
Similarly to most of the Milan players, the defensive ace also revealed that he has been left impressed with January signing Krzysztof Piatek, with the 23-year-old scoring six goals in just five games since arriving from Genoa.
“From the first day I was struck by his desire to score, he lives for that, it’s unbelievable. I think he’s one of the best in Serie A and also helps us by dropping back from the goal too.”
As for his time at Juventus, the Italian international isn’t interested in looking back and is fully focused on now making his time with Milan a success.
“It’s in the past. I’m happy at Milan, that’s the only thing that interests me and to play and do well for these colours. We’re a young squad, but we hope to create something important, starting this year with Champions League qualification,” he concluded.
